An absolutely stunning large Art Deco spelter figure,
by Lucien Gibert, France, c1930,
the very stylish bather carrying her draped towel and fan,
the spelter with an antiqued green patina,
mounted on black marble and green onyx base-
58cm high/70.5cm wide
Marble inscribed R Rochard*
Minor "nibbles" to edges of marble , slight age wear to the cold-painted
spelter finish.
*This is a fantastic quality figure and one I've had only once before when
she was signed Gibert. Now I also know one of these sculptures went
through Christies in the early 90's (missing the fan) and it was also
signed Gibert and both are on the same style marble base.
I think the same foundry possibly produced both Gibert and Irénée
Rochard figures (Rochard was an animalier and you can read about him
here) and the marble has been incorrectly signed.
Lucien Gibert (1904-1988)
Lucien Gibert was a listed French sculptor and medalist.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Saint-Etienne then in Paris
under Jean Boucher and Jacques Despiau. He was a professor in
Sculpture at École nationale des Arts Appliqués in Paris and was awarded
the Honor medal at French artists' exhibition. His works are exhibited in
Museums worldwide (20 museums in France alone).
This really is a "Hollywood Glamour" piece and certainly one of
the best and most stylish French spelter figures I have seen or
owned, with fantastic details to her shoes and hair and a beautiful
period face.
