A stylish Art Deco spelter and ivorine figure by Menneville
(unsigned)
French, c1930
the reclining young woman, dressed in an evening dress, with verdigris
enamel finish
mounted on an rectangular Belgian black marble base, with bronze ball
feet-
21.53cm high/46cm long
the metal signed France
This figure has had some professional restoration to her right hand (due
to ivorine "fatigue"), restored chip to front of marble and there a few
more "nibbles" around the edges, none of which detract.
Slight wear to the enamel finish and the ivorine commensurate with
age.

The signature of Menneville is found on extravagant pieces from the
1920s and 30's.
They usually depict elegantly women dressed sometimes with Borzoi
dogs etc,
mounted either alone or on large clock sets.
These large pieces were made for the middle classes who wanted the
look (but hadn't the pocket) for the large bronze and ivory groups by
Parisian based sculptors like Chiparus.
Many of these figures are just large with no style but this one oozes
style and sophistication and is a good medium size, reminding me very
much of the Jean Harlow "types" of the 1930's.
