A superb and stylish large Art Deco
metal sculpture by Menneville, France, circa 1930,
featuring a swooping alabatross on the crest of a wave,
mounted on an oval black marble base-
13.5in/34.5cm high
23in/58cm long
marble base marked Menneville,
in lovely condition.
Menneville
Famous for their production of large good quality groups in spelter and
ivorine, the signature of Menneville is found on extravagant pieces from
the 1920s and 30's.
They usually depict women dressed as if going to the opera, with Borzoi
dogs etc mounted either alone or on large clock sets.
These large pieces were made for the middle classes who wanted the
look (but hadn't the pocket) for the large bronze and ivory groups
by Parisian based sculptors like Chiparus.
This is an unusual subject matter for Menneville, which I am inclined to
believe is the name of a foundry in that town and not an individual
artist.
This sculpture certainly makes an "art deco" statement!
