An original art deco spelter lamp
Germany circa 1925
mounted on Italian alabaster
the soaring dancer dressed in a "Ballet Russes" style costume,
cold-painted in gold with hints of green and red enamel details,
mounted on a substantial illuminating alabaster base.
36cm high
Slight expected age wear to the lacquer finish and the alabaster.
This is really two decorative art deco items in one because this
stylish lady looks just as good when unlit as she does lit!
This lovely sculpture clearly shows the influence of the Ballet
Russe that took Paris by storm and inspired and excited so many
other sculptors of the period such as Chiparus, Descomps and
Molins.
Unfortunately this lady cannot be attributed to anyone in particular but
when it comes to art deco, style is the most important aspect and this
sculpture/lamp just oozes it.
The alabaster (the globe is creamy white and the square base warm
pale yellow) is best lit with nothing greater than a 15watt bulb (any
greater will damage the it) as used in the photos and it has a recent
fitting with which to hold the bulb securely in the globe.
Alabaster was used in this period because of it's translucent
qualities and for the way it softened the light, creating a "mood".
For a lamp of this age the alabaster "globe" is in fine condition
and has been looked after.
