A rare Art Deco
Austrian metal figure by Adolph/Lorenzl
circa 1930
Depicting a stylised young lady, "frozen" in a dance pose,
with a gold cold-painted finish and enameling,
mounted on a Brazilian green onyx plinth-
31cm high
Signed Adolph in the metal
This lovely figure has wonderful styling
with her slim body and long limbs.
She is in lovely condition with only slight wear to the finish.
There appears to be some confusion over whether in fact Adolph
and Lorenzl are one and the same. There are many examples of
bronze figures that are known to be by Lorenzl that are signed
Adolph (two bronze figures by Adolph can be seen in Brian
Catley's "Art deco and other figures", and both of these are to be
found also signed Lorenzl).
Joseph Lorenzl, Austrian 1892-1950.
Probably now one of the best known of the Art Deco period
sculptors, Lorenzl is famous for his depiction of the slim boyish shape,
so desired in the 1920's, sculpting a wide range of figures
in dancing or coquettish poses, made of bronze, spelter and pottery.
He also designed for the famous firms of Goldscheider, Hutschenreuther
and Keramos.
